Karen Easton is a long term resident of Phillip Island who has been practising Hatha Yoga for more than 35 years. She completed Level 1 teacher training at Byron Bay and also completed an advanced diploma in Yoga teaching from VIYETT in Hampton.

Karen recently completed a 50 hour Yin Yoga teacher qualification and is a qualified Zenargy Yoga teacher for kids. Karen has been teaching Yoga through her Island Yoga practice for 6 years.

Hatha Yoga is suitable for anyone of any age who has a moderate level of health and fitness. Variations are offered or each pose so that students can choose the option which is most suitable for them. Karen encourages all her students to develop body awareness and to work at their own level. If you are unsure about Yoga and your health issues talk to Karen or consult your GP.

Yoga encourages us to stretch and to become more flexible. It exercises the muscles, joints and connective tissues. By practising Yoga we can develop strength and stamina, develop greater breath awareness and learn relaxation techniques.

About Sound Therapy

Sound has been used as a powerful and effective tool for helping to improve health and wellbeing for thousands of years. More recently, the advancement of new science has provided valuable support and insight to these ancient techniques.

With the BAST method research has shown (from data gathered for over 20 years from students and clients) that people experience deep relaxation, reduced anxiety and stress, improved sleep and hormonal balances in the body. This is due to sound inducing an Altered State of Consciousness, similar to meditation. During a sound bath, the brain gets a chance to experience no thought as it is focused on the Sound. The brain shifts into Theta brain waves. This wave is characterised mainly with light sleep, rapid eye movement (REM) dreams and hallucinations. The brain uses this state to exercise itself, rather like working out muscles to make them stronger and to release over all tension. How To Boost Your Immunity Before Winter

Our immune system consists of a network of cells, proteins, lymphoid tissue and organs all busy working together to protect us against infection from the microbial pathogens we face on a daily basis. Our ability to resist and recover from disease depends on how well our immune system is functioning and with winter here, what we do now can help set us up for a healthier and hopefully cold & flu free season.

As a strong immune system is your best defense against disease, here are my top tips to help you boost your immune system now in readiness for the cooler months.

1. Manage Stress 

Stress is a normal part of everyday life and is difficult to avoid, however, to prevent ill health, it is essential that you manage your stress. Chronic stress depresses immune system function, increases our susceptibility to disease and can lead to serious illness if left unmanaged. 

Don’t overdo it, learn to say no, listen to your body and, most importantly, schedule relaxation time and social activities into your day or week. Studies suggest yoga reverses the negative impacts of stress on the immune system by increasing bacteria-fighting proteins and natural killer cells.

Whether its yoga, walking, surfing, listening to music, meditating, affirmations, counseling, journaling or painting, it’s important that you find a way to manage your stress.

If you are finding it difficult to cope with stress, there are many herbal medicines naturopaths use to enhance nervous system and adrenal gland function to improve your stress response so speak to a practitioner for additional support.

2. Exercise

As the days get cooler it can be difficult to find the motivation to exercise. We all know the benefits of exercise to our physical and emotional health. Moderate exercise enhances immune function and may help reduce the incidence of infections possibly via helping to flush out toxins, expel mucous, improve bowel function and enhance circulation.

Whilst it can be difficult to head out into the cold, if you can manage a brisk walk in the fresh air, research suggests green exercise, as it is known, offers additional benefits to our physical and mental well-being.Alternatively, move your practice inside and opt for a guided yoga, Pilates or dance class either at home or in the gym. 

Aim for at least 30 minutes a day on most days of moderate-intensity activity which causes a slight but noticeable increase in your breathing and heart rate.

3. Personal Hygiene Practices

Prevent infection and/or re-infection of yourself and others by practicing appropriate hygiene.

Older adults, young children, pregnant women and those with conditions that reduce immune function including Type 1 & Type 2 diabetes, kidney or liver disease, cancer or stomach issues need to take extra care. 

  • Always cover your mouth with your arm, elbow or sleeve when coughing or sneezing to reduce the spread of germs through air droplets.
  • Don’t share personal items including towels, razors, toothbrushes, handkerchiefs or drink bottles.
  • Follow correct handling at all stages of food preparation and storage to reduce the risk of infection. Keep food preparation areas clean. Separate raw meat, seafood & eggs from fresh food and use separate chopping boards, crockery and utensils. Cook food to proper temperatures and serve it hot. Chill food quickly, refrigerating leftovers within 2 hours of cooking.

4. Warm Nourishing Foods & Spices

A well-known quote from the ancient Greek physician Hippocrates, known as the father of modern medicine, is “Let food be your medicine & medicine be your food.”

It is important to really consider what we put into our bodies. It is always preferable to eat a whole food diet free of unprocessed foods and high in fresh seasonal fruit and vegetables. Specifically, focus on eating the following to support your immune system and wellbeing:

  • Foods high in antioxidants including Vitamins A, C E & Zinc will strengthen your immune system so include orange, red and yellow coloured fruits and vegetables in every meal. Adding fresh or frozen berries to oats is a great way to start to a chilly morning.
  • Eat warming foods, herbs and spices. Replace raw foods and salads with warm cooked foods that are cooked for longer and at lower temperatures using methods like roasting, stewing, braising, poaching, simmering and slow cooking. Include more root vegetables (sweet potato, carrots, pumpkin, parsnips, turnips, onions and beetroot) as well as spinach, quinoa, amaranth, wild rice and legumes.
  • Add the following fresh, raw herbs to your meals, teas and broths for an added immune boost:
    • Garlic for its strong antiviral & antibiotic properties. Ensure you consume it fresh, raw and crushed.
    • Ginger is useful as a strong antiinflammatory, antimicrobial and antioxidant agent.
    • Turmeric has antioxidant, antiinflammatory and immune stimulating properties.
  • Reduce mucous forming foods including meat, dairy, wheat and sugar. Sugar is a known immune-suppressant with studies demonstrating it reduces the ability of white blood cells to function properly.
  • Drink 8 glasses (240mL) filtered water or herbal teas daily. Hot fluids can also help thin mucous secretions.
  • Consume local, raw, pure honey that has not been heat treated. The propolis found in natural honey is used in the prevention of respiratory infections. 
  • A lovely way to warm the body, relax the mind and promote restful sleep is making a simple cup of chai tea. Add cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, nutmeg & black pepper to water, bring to the boil and strain. Add honey, fresh grated ginger and dairy-free milk of your choice to serve.

5. Immune Boosters

To give your immune system that extra kick, nutritional supplements can help but should only be taken on advice and supervision of a qualified health practitioner. 

  • Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant and immune enhancer.
  • Olive leaf extract has potent antioxidant, antimicrobial & antiviral properties.
  • Zinc is involved in many immunological functions including normal development and function of immune cells.
  • Vitamin D enhances our immune system’s response to both bacterial and viral agents.

The gut plays a huge role in immune system regulation. In fact, the intestinal tract is the largest immune organ in the body containing around 80% of all anti-body producing cells, so it makes sense to look after it. Bacteria are vital for shaping the immune response and probiotics are live microorganisms that improve the immune system and prevent pathogens from colonising in the gut. 

It’s important to understand that different probiotic strains are indicated for different conditions. For example evidence suggests lactobacilli & bifidobacteria strains are particularly beneficial in modulating the immune response in the gut with various studies demonstrating decreased rates of infection and illness severity in both adults and children taking these strains. 

In Western herbal medicine there are several herbs that naturopaths use to improve immune system function. Given possible interactions with pharmaceutical medications and safety considerations, herbs must only be taken under the direct advice and care of a qualified naturopath or herbalist. Here are a couple you may have heard of:

  • Astragalus membranaceus enhances antibody responses and is often prescribed throughout Autumn as a preventative to strengthen the immune response.
  • Echinacea spp. has demonstrated use in prevention as well as treatment of the common cold with one study demonstrating prophylactic use resulted in a 65% reduction in natural cold incidence.

6. Listen to your body

If you do get sick promptly address any imbalances with correct nutritional & lifestyle practices.

Avoid toxins such as caffeine, alcohol, cigarettes, chemicals and sugar. 

Most importantly though, symptoms are a sign of something not working efficiently, your body is trying to tell you to slow down, so listen and rest. Allowing your body to rest, recover and heal itself naturally with the support of natural foods and medicines is essential. Why do yoga?

The short answer is that yoga makes you feel better.

Practicing the postures, breathing exercises and meditation makes you healthier in body, mind and spirit.

Yoga lets you tune in, chill out, tone up, all at the same time.

For many people, that’s enough of an answer. But there’s more if you’re interested.

For starters, yoga is good for what ails you. Specifically, research shows that yoga helps manage or control anxiety, arthritis, asthma, back pain, blood pressure, carpal tunnel syndrome, chronic fatigue, depression, diabetes, epilepsy, headaches, heart disease, multiple sclerosis, stress and other conditions and diseases.

What’s more, yoga:

• Improves muscle tone, flexibility, strength and stamina.
• Reduces stress and tension.
• Boosts self esteem.
• Improves concentration and creativity.
• Lowers fat.
• Improves circulation.
• Stimulates the immune system.
• Creates sense of well being and calm.

And that’s just the surface stuff. In fact, most of the benefits mentioned above are secondary to yoga’s original purpose. Developed in India, yoga is a spiritual practice that has been evolving for the last 5,000 years or so. The original yogis were reacting, in part, to India’s ancient Vedic religion, which emphasised rituals. The yogis wanted a direct spiritual experience, one on one, not symbolic ritual. So they developed yoga.Yoga means “union” in Sanskrit, the classical language of India.

According to the yogis, true happiness, liberation and enlightenment comes from union with the divine consciousness known as Brahman, or with Atman, the transcendent Self. The various yoga practices are a methodology for reaching that goal. Learn more abourt these practices you can here. In hatha yoga, for example, postures and breathing exercises help purify the mind, body and spirit so the yogi can attain union.

Pranayama breathing exercises help clear the nadis, or channels, that carry prana the universal life force, allowing prana to flow freely. When the channels are clear and the last block at the base of the spine has been opened, Kundalini rises through the spine, through the central channel called the sushumna-nadi, and joins the crown chakra. According to the tradition, the release of Kundalini leads to enlightenment and union.

If you do yoga will you become enlightened?

Well…you might (of course, it could take a few lifetimes of diligent practice). But then again you might not. But it doesn’t really matter because yoga is a process, and there’s a lot of good to be had along the way.

What if you don’t believe in talk about enlightenment, spirit and the rest of it?

That’s okay, too. Yoga doesn’t discriminate. Even if you don’t believe in the spiritual side of life, you can still do yoga. Whether enlightenment, nadis, prana and Kundalini is literal truth, metaphor or myth is irrelevant. If you do yoga, chances are that you will feel its psycho-physiological effects.

Moreover, the concept of union has a powerful down-to-Earth meaning. Yoga helps us get in touch with our true selves.

Between work, home and all of the demands and stresses in between, it’s easy to lose touch with who we are, that core essence with which we were born. Rushing around all day it sometimes feels like the “I” inside is simply the result of the things we do all day — or the effects those things have on our minds, bodies and spirits.

Ever say “I am hungry” or “I am stressed”? We identify with our conditions. It’s like “hungry” or “stressed” is a name (Hi. I’m Stressed. What’s your name?) As a result, our identities shift with our moods and conditions.

In truth, however, we are not the conditions we experience or things we do. We are not our jobs or the thousands of tasks that make up our jobs. We are not the sensations or emotions we feel. We are not the car we drive or the house we live in. We are not “S/he Who Must Pay Bills.” We are not Mr. and Ms. Stressed.

Strip away the emotions, sensations and conditions and somewhere deep down inside you are still there. Strip it all away and you find out who you really are.

The techniques developed by the yogis to transcend also help us strip away the things that try to mis-define us — the emotions, sensations, desires, achievements and failures of daily life. Through yoga we learn to develop a greater awareness of our physical and psychological states. As a result, we’re in a position to better manage our reactions to the thoughts, feelings and responses we have to the various situations we deal with every day.

With greater awareness comes the sensitivity and skill to find and remove the physical and psychological blocks that often keep us from our true selves. We no longer identify with our conditions. Instead of saying, “I am stressed,” we begin to say, “I feel stress,” or “stress is present.” It’s a subtle but powerful difference.

Or better yet, we say “I feel anxiety and fear, and that’s causing stress and in particular it’s causing tension in my neck and shoulder.” So we breathe deeply to soothe the anxiety. We review the events that led to the onset of those feelings, and in the process they lose their grip on our nervous system. We intentionally relax our shoulder and neck to prevent the stress and tension from building into a permanent condition.

Yoga gives us control of ourselves. It helps cut through the layers of mis-identities that arise in response to our actions, experiences and feelings. It calms the frenzy, clears the clutter and allows us to get back in touch with ourselves.

Yoga is union with self.

Or, as Patanjali, one of the great yoga sages, said: Yogashcittavrittinirodhah (Yoga stills the fluctuations of the mind). Tada drashthuh svarupe’ vasthanam (Then the true self appears.)

However, yoga is not about self-absorption. Yoga is about being in the world. Although most books, videos and websites focus on yoga postures, breathing and meditation, the tradition also emphasizes love, compassion, knowledge and right action as paths toward union.

Whether you pursue yoga as a spiritual path or for its psycho-physiological benefits, yoga is a methodology for developing a deeper experience of your self and the world. And it makes you feel really good.

Dru Yoga is a style that has been passed down through the generations. Dru yoga includes classical yoga asanas, pranayama, mudras, positive affirmations, empowering visualisations, meditation,relaxation and sequences performed in a flowing and dynamic style.

Dru comes from the
